Winter is Here- How’s Your Skin?

As the seasons change so do the needs of our skin. Our skin can get drier, more oily, we can have more breakouts or maybe just more sensitivity. Don’t panic! It’s most likely not your products that have suddenly stopped working for you, it’s the weather that has changed your skin. All it means is that you need to change how you use your products. So much easier, right? And a money saver! Here are some ingredients with their side effects that may affect your skin differently in the winter. Change accordingly if you needed.

Retinol– A derivative of Vitamin A, this can be drying to the skin. You may not notice it as much during the summer but in the winter when our skin gets drier, this can wreak havoc on our moisture level. You don’t have to stop using this, just use less. The Retinol Serum below is the one I recommend to my clients. Most only use about twice a week anyway because I want them to avoid drying out their skin and dealing with all the other side effects. This seems to work best while still giving them great results.

Salicylic Acid– Great for acne and breakouts but extremely drying for the skin. When I recommend any product using this ingredient, I do not suggest using it everyday because I do not want to dry out the skin as the acne goes away. If you find your skin seems flaky or dry, cut it back a bit, maybe just once and go from there. You still want to use the product and get the effectiveness but with using it less. Sometimes even one less use can make a difference.

Vaseline– This seems like an odd choice to be on this list, right? Well, in the winter this seems to be the go-to product. A lot of people use it on their chapped lips, hands, feet, etc. Here’s the thing…it’s occlusive. That means it can’t penetrate the skin and will only sit on the surface. It will not moisturize the skin but it will protect it. Great to put over lotion on the hands and feet for extra hydration (it will lock in that moisture) and also for the nose area when you have a cold. It has no healing benefits though. It can clog pores on the face since it can’t penetrate so use with caution.

Benzoyl Peroxide– Same as salicylic acid but even more drying. Below is the only product I recommend with benzoyl peroxide and I always say, proceed with caution. Benzoyl Peroxide is an ingredient you only want to use temporarily (there are many side effects that aren’t good long-term). The severe drying side effect can actually age your skin. Whatever the season, use with caution. In the winter, think twice.

Hand Sanitizer– Although this is not for the face, I thought I would throw it in here anyway. 🙂 The alcohol and lack of water can really dry out your hands. Try washing your hands like we used to…with soap and water and then moisturize.

These are guidelines and suggestions. What works for one person may not work for another. Some may not be able to change their routine so that means you will need to add to your regimen so you can get more moisture. You need to compensate for the water being pulled out of your skin because if you don’t, your skin will start to produce more oil. This grapeseed oil is great for hydrating the ski without clogging the pores. Click on picture to learn more about it.

Is Mom’s Beauty Advice Right?

Things have changed a lot since the 50’s and what women could do then, we can’t necessarily get away with now. Plus, we know so much more about skin and we have access to vital ingredients that will help us age. Of course, some women are just blessed with good skin and are able to not do anything to their skin and still age gracefully. Just because this was your mom, doesn’t mean this will be you. And you may not know until the damage is done.

Here are some tips that mom may have given you…

1. Cold Cream is Best- That just isn’t true anymore. We know that retinoids and peptides can stimulate collagen, that antioxidants prevent free-radical damage and the breakdown of collagen and elastin, and that sunscreens prevent damage from ultraviolet light. Cold cream doesn’t contain these types of ingredients.

2. Use Vaseline to Remove Your Eye Makeup- Yes, it will work. You also take the risk of getting breakouts and milia (those tiny white bumps that are common around the eye area). Vaseline can clog pores and does not easily remove.

3. Wash Your Face with Hot Water to Clean Pores- Please don’t do this! Lukewarm is best. Hot water can actually dry out the skin and after continuous use can give you broken capillaries. It is exceptionally bad for those with rosacea and acne. Furthermore, it will not clean your pores. Proper exfoliation is still your best option (until you come in for a facial!).

2 Beauty Myths

I was reading some beauty myths and I wanted to share them with you. One made me mad, frustrated and confused. The other made me laugh.

1. Putting Vaseline on your face nightly will prevent wrinkles– I agree that this is not true. The part that made me mad, frustrated and confused was what the dermatologist said, “Petroleum jelly is the strongest moisturizer there is because it forces oils into the skin and prevents them from evaporating.”  He needed to elaborate on this. If you have oily skin, this may work for you but what about those of us with dry skin? I don’t have any oil in my skin so this would be absolutely useless on my face. At least the article mentioned the potential for breakouts that Vaseline can cause. I would not recommend this for anyone!

Often, not enough information is given, so people end up doing the wrong things for their skin.

2. Preparation H deflates puffiness– This made me laugh. Apparently the ingredient in the product that used to help us with this is no longer available in the U.S. version. They reformulated it in 1994! So basically all it will do now is dry out your skin and inflame your skin. Stay away from it!! 🙂

A Cold and Your Skin

Updated: March 2018

We are nearing the end of  cold/flu season…hopefully. And this got me thinking. Just because we are sick, doesn’t mean we have to look it, right? Here are some tips to stay looking fresh and healthy.

1. Drink lots of fluids- That’s an easy one. Water is your best bet. Staying hydrated is most important. And while water is the least efficient way to hydrate your skin, it is still important for the body.

2. Don’t lick your lips. Keep a lip balm close by so you grab that every time you feel your lips getting dry. (My favorite is Burts Bees Lip Balm) The more you lick, the drier your lips get.

3. Use tissue that is unscented. The fragrances that are added can be irritating to your nose. Choose one with moisturizing properties for extra-softness but just make sure it is non-scented.

4. Wash Your Face- I know when you’re sick, the last thing you care about is your skin or showering but this is so important. Our skin gets so dry from all the medications and just from being sick, that washing your face, at least once a day (twice is better!), is vital. Keep it well moisturized too. You can skip exfoliation while you are sick. It can sometimes cause your skin to get more dry.

5. Grape Seed Oil– Keep this with you if you can. Apply it throughout the day on your nose. This will save your nose from dryness, irritation and flakiness.

6. To ease nostril irritation, apply vaseline or Neosporin. Using a Q-Tip, roll it around the inner part of your nostril. It will feel so much better and look less irritated.

7. If you must leave the house, and most of us have to these days when we are sick, use liquid foundation instead of powder. The powder can make your skin look super dry, especially around the nose area.

Handy Skin Care Tips For Women’s Hands

I’ve been telling women about their hands for years! Whatever you do to your face, you should do to your neck, chest and hands. Here are some simple tips to help keep your hands young.

1. Always, always wear sunscreen. At least SPF #15 but I recommend #30.

2. Exfoliate your hands every few days. Just like your face, getting rid of the dead will skin will allow the beneficial products to penetrate and make a difference. I use a Glycolic Cleanser for my face so on the nights I use it, I also will wash my neck, chest and hands (top of hands!). Glycolic Acid helps with aging (brown spots).

3. Keep your hands hydrated. Lotion helps but doesn’t necessarily hydrate the skin. Grapeseed Oil will, so put that on every night. You can put lotion on over it if you want.

Treat the Hands

About once a week, give your hands some extra TLC.

1. Exfoliate using a Glycolic Cleanser (hopefully you will get one if you don’t already have one) and a Konjac Sponge.

2. After cleansing, apply Grapeseed Oil and massage in generously.

3. Apply a hand creme (not lotion- creme is thicker)

4. Apply Vaseline (optional) to lock in everything. Vaseline is occlusive, which means that it helps seal in the products.

5. Put on gloves or socks or something similar to protect your hands. Relax and leave on for about 20 minutes.

Sunburned? Try These Tips

Updated: July 2017

So you spent a little too much time in the sun and forgot to reapply and now you’re fried! Yes, it is a little painful but there are ways to alleviate the pain and the actual burn a little quicker than just waiting. Here they are…

1. O2 Calming Gel– I love this even more than Aloe Vera. It’s soothing and works for so may things, including sunburns.

2. Honey– If you have been reading my blogs, you know I love honey for the skin! According to research, it helps heal wounds, and applying some to your sunburn can encourage the growth of new skin cells. It also has a lot of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

3. Milk Bath– It has anti-inflammatory properties that help heal a sunburn. I find this one to be quite effective.

4. Cortisone Cream– Use this if it is swelling and really painful.

5. Drink Water– Staying hydrated is important because this burn is very dehydrating.

6. Grape Seed Oil– Another one of my favorites! I like to use this instead of lotion because this will penetrate the skin and actually moisturize whereas a lotion will just sit on the surface. This really works!!!

Ouch!!

What to Avoid

1. Hot Water– Super drying to the skin.

2. Abrasive/Harsh Soaps– Your skin needs TLC so if you must cleanse, use a moisturizing cleanser so you aren’t stripping your skin.

3. Perfumes/Colognes– The chemicals can irritate the skin.

4. Lotions/Heavy Creams/Vaseline– As I mentioned above, the lotion sits on the surface and this can trap the heat in and actually slow down the healing and promote peeling. Please avoid!

Don’t Let Your Hands Reveal Your True Age

I tell all my clients that whatever you do to your face, you should also do to your neck, chest and hands. They are so often neglected but they will show your age so quickly. Sunscreen is super important! It isn’t necessary to cleanse your hands the same way but all those serums and moisturizers will keep your hands hydrated and protected. It’s a simple step and will make a huge difference! Wearing gloves while washing dishes is a must for hand models so maybe we should follow that rule too. 🙂

Your nails can also be a sign of aging. I’m definitely not an expert in this area but fungus, yellowing and dark spots are not attractive and things you will not find on younger people. (these can also be a sign of poor health so get this checked out next time you’re at the doctor) Pay for the extra nail treatments when you get your manicures. If you don’t want to spend the money then do the extras at home. Hydrate your cuticles (try applying some oil and vaseline- then wrap in socks).
