Are Your Products Old?

If you ever get random rashes or pimples and wonder where they are coming from or why, it could be from your old skin care products. Expired skin care items can grow bacteria and mold which can lead to acne and infections. Unfortunately in the US the FDA does not require cosmetic companies to put an expiration date on their products so therefore no one really knows when to throw it away. We hope that you will go through it before it goes bad but women tend to have a habit of buying many different items so we just don’t get the chance to empty them before they expire.

Here are some guidelines and tips to help:

1. Write the date on any new products so you can remember when you purchased them.

2. If you think it’s outdated, smell it. If it smells funny, then it’s probably time to toss it. If it has changed color or consistency, that is another clue to toss it. Please note that natural products can slightly change color over time and still remain effective and safe to use.

3. The following is a list of items with an approximate shelf life (some items may differ). Cleansers– 1 Year. Serums– 6-12 months. Moisturizers– 1 Year. SPF– 6-12 months. Acne Treatments– 2 Years.

4. Products in jars can have shorter shelf life because you may be dipping your finger in them to get the product out. Try using a spatula or something so that you don’t add bacteria to it.

Handy Skin Care Tips For Women’s Hands

I’ve been telling women about their hands for years! Whatever you do to your face, you should do to your neck, chest and hands. Here are some simple tips to help keep your hands young.

1. Always, always wear sunscreen. At least SPF #15 but I recommend #30.

2. Exfoliate your hands every few days. Just like your face, getting rid of the dead will skin will allow the beneficial products to penetrate and make a difference. I use a Glycolic Cleanser for my face so on the nights I use it, I also will wash my neck, chest and hands (top of hands!). Glycolic Acid helps with aging (brown spots).

3. Keep your hands hydrated. Lotion helps but doesn’t necessarily hydrate the skin. Grapeseed Oil will, so put that on every night. You can put lotion on over it if you want.

Treat the Hands

About once a week, give your hands some extra TLC.

1. Exfoliate using a Glycolic Cleanser (hopefully you will get one if you don’t already have one) and a Konjac Sponge.

2. After cleansing, apply Grapeseed Oil and massage in generously.

3. Apply a hand creme (not lotion- creme is thicker)

4. Apply Vaseline (optional) to lock in everything. Vaseline is occlusive, which means that it helps seal in the products.

5. Put on gloves or socks or something similar to protect your hands. Relax and leave on for about 20 minutes.

Let’s Prevent Summer Sun Spots!

If you’re prone to hyperpigmentation (age spots, sun spots, brown spots, etc), then you probably notice that they become more visible during the summer. It’s definitely a challenge to prevent and/or fade these spots, there are ways to help keep your skin more evenly toned.

  1. EXFOLIATE– It’s always important to exfoliate your skin but even more so when dealing with skin discoloration. Using ingredients like glycolic acid and retinol will help break apart these pigmented cells and lessen their appearance. Of course, you don’t want to exfoliate too much because in the summer the melanin is already so active, you don’t want to do anything to trigger more melanin. Recommended Products: Glycolic Cleanser, Glycolic/Retinol Pads, Retinol Scrub, Beta-Carotene/Papain Renewal Serum (safe for pregnant/lactating women)
  2. SUNSCREEN– Wear sunscreen everyday, apply generously and often. The #1 cause of premature aging is UV light and exposing it to the sun will bring out those unwanted spots. Your sunscreen should be SPF 30 (a higher number does not necessarily give you more protection but it does have more chemicals) and it’s important to apply enough to cover the skin. The biggest problem with SPF is not the number but the amount used and how often applied. If you’re in the sun, I recommend applying at least every 2 hours (more if you go in the water). Recommend Product: Sheer Protection SPF 30 (my favorite sunscreen ever!)
  3. WEAR A HAT– Covering your face and not exposing it directly to the sun is the best idea but you have to be careful because if wear one that is tight on the forehead, it can cause increased discoloration (especially if you’re prone to getting it there) due to the heat.
  4. BEWARE of the HEAT and SUN-The newest research has show that it isn’t just the UV light but the actual heat that can do damage to our skin.The heat stimulates the melanin. Even if you do everything to protect your skin, you may still get the discoloration so this means that limiting your exposure to the sun and the heat can be equally important.
  5. VITAMIN C– Using a natural skin lightener like vitamin C (specifically magnesium ascorbic phosphate, a form of vitamin C) helps to suppress melanin cells to fade and prevent discoloration.Vitamin C can also help boost your SPF! Recommended Products: Vita-C Serum (Best-selling serum!)
  6. MONTHLY FACIALS– Be Proactive, Not Reactive. I have said this for years and it’s still true. There are many things that I can do in the treatment room to help your skin during the summer months, like fill it with lots of antioxidants. It’s easy to get sidetracked and not come in for facials and just wait for the fall, but since preventing is easier than correcting, don’t skin the summer! OC Register Interviewed Me!

I got a phone call last week from a writer from the OC Register. He wanted to know if he could interview me about winter skin care and sunscreen. Of course! Why would I ever say no? 🙂

Well, not only did he talk to me but he also wanted to send his photographer to my treatment room so he could get some pictures of me working on a clients. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find someone who would be willing to be photographed without makeup and on such short notice. Luckily, I found someone! She is amazing and was so kind to help me out.

Kids and Sun Protection

It is never too early to start protecting your children from the sun. Every freckle is sun damage. That is just a fact. Below is some information to help you do what is best for your kids.

General Rules- Always apply sunscreen about 30 minutes before going outside. Water-resistant does not mean you don’t have to reapply again. Every time they come out of the water, apply more sunscreen. I know they won’t like it but they will thank you later!

1. 6 months and younger– Sunscreen is not recommended for infants because their skin is more sensitive. It is extremely important to protect them though. They have very little melanin, the pigment that gives color to skin, eyes and hair and provides some sun protection. This means that infants are more susceptible to sun damage. Protect them with lightweight clothing, shade and keeping them out of the sun (directly and indirectly).

2. 6-12 months– It is now safe to use sunscreen but their skin is still super sensitive. Sticks for the face are great because they tend to not get into the eyes. Sunscreen hurts when it’s in the eyes!

3. Toddlers and up– Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses. Whatever you can do!

Sunscreen, Sun and Your Skin, Myths

Pregnancy and the Sun

I have often seen women on the beach or at the pool in a bikini while pregnant and this always surprised me. Now, I don’t have a problem with it (I actually think it can be pretty cute!) but there are reasons why a woman should be more covered up while pregnant.

1. Women are more sun-sensitive therefore it is much easier to burn. Increasing your chances of cancer.

2. Melasma is another reason to avoid the sun. Women’s estrogen levels are much higher and that stimulates the production of melanin (that is what makes you tan). It is very easy to get dark patches around the lips, chin, cheeks and forehead. Skipping one summer in the sun is worth it to avoid these undesirable dark patches that can take up to a year after delivery to fade.

3. Sunbathing can also be dehydrating. Not having enough fluids for a pregnant woman can be dangerous and lead to pre-term contractions. Obviously this is a more extreme case but better safe than sorry!

4. UV rays also break down folic acid. Not worth it since folic acid helps to reduce the chance of birth defects.

5. There has been talk that inhaling the fumes from spray sunscreens is not healthy for anyone so this would be especially true for pregnant women.

Summer Makeup Tips for 2013

Summer is almost officially here (yay!) and that usually means less makeup for everyone. I have put together some easy tips to make you look and feel beautiful without having to wear a lot of makeup. More of a natural look is great for summertime and remember, the better your skin looks, the better YOU look! Take care of your skin first and your makeup will look amazing. 🙂

1. Tinted Moisturizer. Keep it light and simple. Click here to read my blog on how to make your own.

2. Bronzer– This is a good way to enhance your natural tan or to give yourself that “natural tan.” It’s best to use one without shimmer though since no one actually gets shimmery when they tan. 🙂 Focus on the apples of your cheeks, right above your cheekbones, forehead and chin. Try to find a liquid bronzer because powder can be drying to the skin.

3. Blush– Add a little bit of pink to your cheeks for a rosy hue. Cream blush is best as it will last longer and look more natural.

4. Mascara– A must for everyday as far as I’m concerned! In the summer though, if you know you will be around the ocean or pool (river, lake, etc) then you can wear a clear mascara so you don’t risk the color running down your face or smudging. And don’t forget to curl your lashes. It opens your eyes and makes a big difference! Shiseido and Shu Uemera eyelash curlers are my faves.

5. Lip Gloss– Another must-have for summer! Something that will add some color to your lips without the heavy look of lipstick. A lip stain would work as well and last longer.

6. SPF– And, most importantly, don’t forget your sunscreen!! SPF 30 is the highest you need.

Rosacea

What is Rosacea? A very common skin disease that affects people over the age of 30. It causes redness on your nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead. Some people get little bumps and pimples on the red parts of their faces. Rosacea can also cause burning and soreness in your eyes.

What Causes Rosacea? Experts don’t know what causes this yet. They do know that something is irritating the skin but they know it isn’t an infection caused by bacteria. Usually those with fair skin or who blush easily are prone and it seems to run in families.

Symptoms? Redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead. Small visible blood vessels on the face. Bumps or pimples on the face. Watery or irritated eyes.

There is no cure for Rosacea but some food and beverages can trigger the symptoms (alcohol and spicy foods are common) as well as anything that normally causes your skin to get red, like working out. It’s up to you to figure out what causes your flare-ups. Ignoring this condition can possibly make it worse, researchers have found.

What to Use: All products should be calming and gentle for the skin. Hydration is very important! This is what I recommend as far as Skin Script and Le Mieux products go…

Pomegranate Cream Cleanser or Green Tea Cleanser, Iso-Cell Solution, Hyaluronic Acid Serum (Le Mieux), Derma Relief Serum (Le Mieux), Vita-C Serum, Moisturizer (maybe the Canteen Balancing Moisturizer but there are other options), SPF. Not all of these need to be used so book a consultation with me so we can decided what is best for you.

Vitamin C can definitely help this skin condition but, unfortunately, it cannot fix it.

I can do a great facial for Rosacea clients using calming ingredients. If you have a more serious case or are looking to do something a little more intense, photo-facials can be great.

In more severe cases, medicine or antibiotics might be necessary. Make an appointment with your doctor (Dermatologist) and see if you are a candidate.

UV Rays Damaging Effects

This is the perfect example of why sunscreen is so important even when you are not directly in the sun. This truck driver spent years driving and the left side of his face shows the damaging effects of UV rays. Wear sunscreen. Everyday.

PS He didn’t realize the damage until it was too late. It takes about 10 years for the evidence to start to show.
