Read This if You Use a Clarisonic!

Updated: October 2017

I used to recommend the Clarisonic. I still think there are a lot of benefits to using a facial brush but now that I have found Konjac Sponges, I don’t find the facial brush as necessary. Exfoliating your skin is extremely important and I have often written and spoken about it. I have also said that you should not over-exfoliate because that can be damaging to the skin.

I now want to provide you with even more information on exfoliating and the Clarisonic.

1. This brush should definitely not be used every morning and night. That is way too much especially if you are using other exfoliating items in your routine like a scrub or glycolic acid.

2. Too much exfoliation can cause dryness because it allows moisture to leave the cells more easily. Leaving you more dehydrated. This brush (or any brush) should be considered when you think about your exfoliation schedule.

3. When you exfoliate your skin, we call that a form of trauma. That is a good thing…occasionally. Exfoliation causes trauma which then puts your skin in repair mode and stimulates cellular regeneration. If you over-exfoliate, you can trigger premature aging. The opposite of what everyone wants!

4. Aggressive exfoliation can cause inflammation (even if you don’t see it). Chronic and prolonged inflammation is a major cause of aging and also bad for acne.

5. The Clarisonic (or any facial brush, harsh wash cloths, facial scrubs) is considered a physical exfoliant and if your skin is extremely reactive to stimulation, it’s important to be more gentle so that you don’t cause post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation. Those who are prone to discoloration and skin of color should be extra cautious!

6. Sometimes the Clarisonic is just too much stimulation for your skin and it will cause breakouts. If this is you, don’t wait for your skin to get used to it. Stop using it! Everyone is different and it may not work for you. I am one of those people.

My recommendation-

I will give just a general exfoliation schedule but this could be different for your skin type. Contact me for a consultation and we can discuss your specific needs

Glycolic Acid is my favorite form of chemical exfoliation to use at home. Skin Scripts Glycolic Cleanser is great. You feel a tingle but it’s effective! Use this about 2-3x a week. Pm only.

For your physical exfoliation, choose either a scrub (Skin Script Retinol Scrub is amazing!) or the Konjac Sponge (inexpensive replacement for a facial brush). The Retinol Scrub should be used about 2-3 times a week and the Konjoac Sponge can be used every other night. Pm only.

The chemical exfoliant (glycolic acid) will dissolve the dead skin and the physical exfoliant (sponge, brush or scrub) will lift off the dead skin. Different but both are necessary!

Product Review- Retinol 2% Exfoliating Scrub

If you’re looking for a great exfoliating scrub then look no further. This is a client favorite and makes your skin look and feel amazing. One of the best things about this scrub is that it can be doubled as a mask. If you leave it on for 10 minutes, then the retinol has more opportunity to get in there and do what it needs to do.

Bonus Tip! Use the Glycolic Cleanser first, leave it on and then apply the scrub/mask. Tingling is normal. This addition will boost instant results!

Retinol-2perc-Exfoliating-ScrubMask

This scrub is a powerful cellular turnover scrub with Retinol (Vitamin A) and jojoba beads to clean, soothe and polish the skin. The retinol encourages the breakup of blackheads and clogged pores, jojoba beads gently exfoliate dead skin cells, while kojic lightens age spots and blemishes left from scars.

Lessens Visible Aging
Lightens Discolorations
Provides Chemical and Physical Exfoliation
Promotes Collagen Synthesis
Assists in Healing and Rejuvenating

Sunscreen Buildup? This happens so often in the summer because we are applying a lot more sunscreen than we do in the winter. This is a great scrub to help fight through the buildup and clean those pores!

Review of Skin Script and Le Mieux

I could talk for days about the products I use and recommend because I love them that much. When used correctly and consistently, my clients get results.

Le Mieux:  Hands down…. Le Mieux has the most amazing serums.
TGF – AMAZING anti aging serum.  This is my trick on set when prepping skin for makeup for people who have some lines, so that makeup doesn’t settle as much.  Also, I love using it as a preventative around the eyes for people that are starting to see the beginning of fine lines.

Skin Script:
Blemish Spot Treatment – OBSESSED doesn’t even begin to describe how much I love this product.  It’s my crack and sometimes I basically use it as my moisturizer on days that my skin feel likes it’s going to need some help to keep the pimples at bay.  It works great over and under makeup.  It’s way better than any spot treatment you find at retail outlets, and I’ve tried them all.  Please do yourself a favor and get this product.  MUST HAVE!!

BlemishSpotTreatment-140x300

Glycolic Cleanser – It’s tingly and makes my skin feel squeaky clean.  I use it at night twice a week to get that extra boost of cleanliness.

Blemish Pads (Clarifying Pads) – These pads are awesome!  And if you rip them in half you get twice as much.  My skin is SUPER oily, and these pads are a great degreaser.  I definitely target areas that feels like there might be a breakout and do a double pass along those areas.  Be careful not to overuse these because your skin can start getting dry.

Green Tea Cleanser – I like using this cleanser as a makeup remover since it’s pretty mild and takes care of the job.

Handy Skin Care Tips For Women’s Hands

I’ve been telling women about their hands for years! Whatever you do to your face, you should do to your neck, chest and hands. Here are some simple tips to help keep your hands young.

1. Always, always wear sunscreen. At least SPF #15 but I recommend #30.

2. Exfoliate your hands every few days. Just like your face, getting rid of the dead will skin will allow the beneficial products to penetrate and make a difference. I use a Glycolic Cleanser for my face so on the nights I use it, I also will wash my neck, chest and hands (top of hands!). Glycolic Acid helps with aging (brown spots).

3. Keep your hands hydrated. Lotion helps but doesn’t necessarily hydrate the skin. Grapeseed Oil will, so put that on every night. You can put lotion on over it if you want.

Treat the Hands

About once a week, give your hands some extra TLC.

1. Exfoliate using a Glycolic Cleanser (hopefully you will get one if you don’t already have one) and a Konjac Sponge.

bath-sponges

2. After cleansing, apply Grapeseed Oil and massage in generously.

3. Apply a hand creme (not lotion- creme is thicker)

4. Apply Vaseline (optional) to lock in everything. Vaseline is occlusive, which means that it helps seal in the products.

5. Put on gloves or socks or something similar to protect your hands. Relax and leave on for about 20 minutes.

Are You Taking Care of Your Chest?

I have a lot of older clients that always ask me about their chest. They are concerned about sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles. Once the damage is done, it is much more difficult to treat the skin…but not impossible. Start caring for your skin now! The younger you are, the more you can do to prevent the damage. Below I have listed options for preventing and correcting this often neglected area.

1. Exfoliation. Just like your face, you body needs to be exfoliated to get rid of the dry skin so that products can properly penetrate and do the job correctly. Dead skin is an unwanted barrier. Unlike your face, you can exfoliate this area more often. I recommend using a Konjac Body Sponge every other day and a Glycolic Cleanser about 2-3x a week.

2. Treat the Skin. If you are using serums on your face, then apply them on your neck and chest too. Immediately after a shower.

3. Grapeseed Oil. This is great from head to toe. I personally use it all over my body and my skin is super soft. Even better, this is a great product for aging. Grapeseed Oil should be used at night after you get out of the shower.

4. SPF. Always, always, always wear sunscreen. This is true for your face and body. Don’t just extend it from your face, hoping it is enough for your neck and chest. Use enough that you are fully covered.

Hydration is the key to making fine lines and wrinkles look less obvious. The drier your skin is (anywhere on the body), the more you will see what you don’t want to show the world.

Skin Care Kits That Make Sense

Generic skin care kits don’t usually work for most people. The ones that say “Anti-Aging” are supposed to be for people over  a certain age but I find that younger people want those products too but the whole kit doesn’t necessarily work for them. Anti-Aging is generated for those with dry skin because as we age our skin gets dry (or drier). Well, if you have oily skin but don’t want to age, what do you use?

I have decided to create my own kits. I will introduce them slowly and they will be featured on my website. They will target different age groups, skin types and needs. None of us want acne and none of us want to age. We shouldn’t be boxed into a category and force our skin to fit into it. Our skin care should fit into our skin needs.

I will also put together some specials so that you can try some of the products and learn to love them like myself and my clients. I get testimonials, text messages and phone calls all the time from clients telling me how my facials and the products have changed their skin. I want you to be a success story too!

These are both great cleansers and work amazing together. The Pomegranate Cleanser can be used am/pm followed by the Cucumber Toner. Then use the Glycolic Cleanser 2-3x a week (also followed by the Cucumber Toner). This is great for dry and normal skin types and even those with breakouts.

My Daily Routine

I get asked a lot what products I use, when I use them and basically what my routine is like everyday. I thought writing it out in this blog would be the best way. I actually use (and love!) the products I retail and use on my clients. Having dry and very sensitive skin, I have had to be pretty careful and selective with what I can put on it. I finally have a great routine and I am seeing the results! That’s the best part, right?

images

So, here it is. I keep it simple because I don’t want to spend an hour on my face morning and night.

AM

  • Skin Script Pomegranate Cream Cleanser
  • Skin Script Cucumber Toner
  • Le Mieux RX Complex Serum (this contains Vit-C which is amazing for your skin…it’s the only Vit-C I can use on my skin)
  • Le Mieux TGF-β Booster Serum
  • Le Mieux Hyaluronic Acid Serum (combine all 3 serums and I apply to damp skin)
  • Wait about 30-60 seconds to settle in
  • Skin Script Hydrating Moisturizer
  • Wait about 30-60 seconds to settle in
  • Skin Script SPF

PM

  • Skin Script Pomegranate Cream Cleanser
  • Skin Script Cucumber Toner
  • Grape Seed Oil (I always wash my face at least 15 minutes before bed so the oil has time to settle in)

Some additional things…

  1. Skin Script Glycolic Cleanser (pm) 3x week- I swear my face glows after I use it 🙂
  2. I am currently not using an Eye Cream to see if the serums will be enough for that area. If you are not using these serums though, I highly recommend an eye cream.
  3. When I get out of the shower , I apply the 3 serums to my face neck, chest and hands. Wait about 30-60 seconds to settle in and then apply grape seed oil. Day or night…just depends when I shower.
