Lessons I Learned in Makeup School

1. Invest in some high quality makeup brushes. I don’t always believe that more expensive means better but it is usually true with brushes. The ones that you are getting at Target simply are not the same as the ones at Nordstrom. Sorry. 😦 The good news is that if you take care of these, they will last you a very, very long time. So at least you are getting your money’s worth.images-1

2. Makeup will never look good on dirty, un-exfoliated skin. Take care of the canvas and your makeup will look so much better! Come see me if it’s been awhile since your last facial. You will be amazed at the difference.

3. Apply lip balm prior to makeup application so your lips will be ready for your lip gloss, lip pencil or whatever you are using.

4. Lips and Cheeks should work in harmony.

5. Eyes- Think color theory! Going with colors that are the opposite of your eye color will bring out your eyes.

6. Shadows have always been the most flattering to fill in your eyebrows but now they have brush on colors and I love them. Black is too harsh for everyone! If you apply the eyeshadow color against the hair, it will stick to the skin and last longer.

7. Eyeliner is to help eyelashes look thicker. Avoid liner on the lower lids as this can age you and force peoples eye to look lower. You always want them to look up…top of your face. Imagine it or do it on a friend. It makes a difference. Sometimes you can use it if you’re going for a certain look or if you have the eye shape for it.

8. Blush- It should be the color you naturally blush. No one blushes orange!!

9. Do not confuse bronzer with contour. Most often bronzer has shimmer in it. Contour is to help shape your face and shimmer will add attention to that area. Bronzer mimics where the sun would hit your face. Orange is not a bronzer or a contour color!!

10. Your lip color should not match your outfit. It should go in harmony (as I said above) with your cheek color and also your skin.

Have fun with your makeup but always look your age!

Nothing ages someone more than trying too hard to look young!!

What are Age Spots?

Age Spots or Liver Spots as they are sometimes called are not really caused by aging. Though they do show up as we get older, they are actually caused by sun damage which is why they show up on areas that tend to get more sun like our hands, chest and face. Bleaching creams, peels and lightening treatments may lessen their appearance but to rule out more serious problems, check with your dermatologist first.

Sunscreen is key to prevent further damage but also to stop the spots from getting darker.

My favorite!

Vitamin C is an ingredient that will help the current spots by brightening and evening the skin tone.

Retinol is similar to vitamin c but much stronger. This gets deeper into the skin creating even more results.

What is a Facial?

Basically, it cleans, exfoliates, and nourishes the skin, and specially focuses on addressing a specific or various needs of your skin, like rejuvenation and replenishment of the skin’s lost nutrients, using different skin care products and professional techniques in skin care. When done regularly, a facial actually boosts the effectiveness of your skin care regimen so you are better able to achieve your skin care goal, and helps to maintain your ideal skin condition in a major way. 

Who Can Benefit From a Facial?

No matter how sensitive or hard to treat your skin is (or what age), you can still benefit from a facial because any facial can be suited to fit your individual skin care needs. If you have sensitive skin, only gentle cleansing and moisturizing products will be used. If your goal is to clear up your acne, I will guide you toward a facial that will  help you achieve that goal. Be sure to communicate clearly with me exactly what you want to get out of your facial, so that I can do my best to accommodate you.   

What Can I Expect During My Facial?

Cleansing, skin analysis, exfoliation, massage, extraction of blackheads and other impurities, and application of products targeted to your skin type (dry, oily, combination, sensitive, mature). Some facials involve light massaging of the face and neck to aid in further relaxation and to stimulate blood and oxygen flow to the skin. Hand treatments are also included in selected facials.

What About Home Care?

When you leave my treatment room after a facial, your skin will be glowing, fresh, and hydrated. Some facials might also increase breakouts for a short period afterward, since the skin was stimulated and is now ridding itself of toxins and impurities (this is not very common but can happen). Keep in mind that the more facials you get, the less impurities your skin will contain, which means you will experience fewer breakouts as time goes on. I will give you a “prescription” for a home-care regimen that will include detailed instructions on how to use them and why you should you use them. Education is key! If you are looking for results, it is important to use the proper skin care products for your skin type, at home.

Cetaphil. Is it Actually Good For Your Skin?

Cetaphil is definitely one of the most common cleansers that I find my new clients using. It is a deceitful product and most think that it is a “pretty good” cleanser and gentle for the skin. At one point, years ago, I used this cleanser too. Now that I know better, I would never recommend it to anyone and I always get annoyed when I hear that a Dermatologist has told my client it is good for the skin. Below is an excerpt from a blog post that I found about Cetaphil. She explains it better than I can.

Why Not Use Cetaphil?

I cannot even begin to tell you how many people I have spoken to who have been recommended to use this cleanser, for their so named ‘sensitive’ skin concerns. I would love to share my professional knowledge regarding the Cetaphil cleanser formulation, with specific regard as to what it is actually doing for your skin – and the topic regarding ‘sensitive’ skin is one best left for another day!

There are a multitude of reasons why skin breaks down, creating inflammation – otherwise known a ‘sensitivity’. For a cleanser that is advertised worldwide by Galderma as “developed by dermatologists especially for sensitive skin, [this] soap substitute preserves your skin’s natural protective oils”. I’m quite adamant that they have missed their mark… totally!

Why not use Cetaphil cleanser Spa & Beauty Therapy Articles In an interesting formulation addition, Cetaphil is loaded with the emulsifier sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), one of the most overused synthetic skin cosmetic ingredients that actually strips your skins natural lipid barrier as it ‘cleanses’ your skin. This surfactant is very unpopular with every serious skin therapist as its effect renders your skin more susceptible to external irritants, increases internal inflammation as your skin immune cells become overagitated, heightening redness & possible breakout as it negatively impacts your natural pH. Otherwise known as your ‘acid mantle’, our natural pH balance is our first line of defense that protects our skin in numerous ways, including against invading microbes. I do think it is pretty odd that Galderma call their cleanser ‘pH balanced’ – as, yes, the actual entire formulation inside the bottle may be – but as soon as there is contact with skin it completely interferes with our pH. In reality there no balance there at all!

Some skins will hide the presentation of inflammatory symptoms better than others, although it is important to note that it IS happening, whether you can immediately see and feel it, or not. This is what alarms me about so many products like this, and why I feel compelled to share!

SLS is used because it is cheap and easy to synthetically manufacture. You can find SLS in body washes, shampoos, toothpastes, cleansers and in cleaning products. These are all high contact products, which is a scary thought. I have certainly easily and affordably chosen to limit or eliminate my daily exposure to this ingredient!

A Cold and Your Skin

We are nearing the end of  cold/flu season…hopefully. And this got me thinking. Just because we are sick, doesn’t mean we have to look it, right? Here are some tips to stay looking fresh and healthy.

1. Drink lots of fluids- That’s an easy one. Water is your best bet. Staying hydrated is most important. And while water is the least efficient way to hydrate your skin, it is still important for the body.

2. Don’t lick your lips. Keep a lip balm close by so you grab that every time you feel your lips getting dry. (My favorite is Burts Bees Lip Balm) The more you lick, the drier your lips get.

3. Use tissue that is unscented. The fragrances that are added can be irritating to your nose. Choose one with moisturizing properties for extra-softness but just make sure it is non-scented.

4. Wash Your Face- I know when you’re sick, the last thing you care about is your skin or showering but this is so important. Our skin gets so dry from all the medications and just from being sick, that washing your face, at least once a day (twice is better!), is vital. Keep it well moisturized too. You can skip exfoliation while you are sick. It can sometimes cause your skin to get more dry.

5. Grape Seed Oil– Keep this with you if you can. Apply it throughout the day on your nose. This will save your nose from dryness, irritation and flakiness.

6. To ease nostril irritation, apply vaseline or Neosporin. Using a Q-Tip, roll it around the inner part of your nostril. It will feel so much better and look less irritated.

7. If you must leave the house, and most of us have to these days when we are sick, use liquid foundation instead of powder. The powder can make your skin look super dry, especially around the nose area.
